PARENT ADVISOR CONSULTATIONS

parent advisor

Parent Advisors serve the counties of Marin, Napa, Solano, and Sonoma. They are parents who have children with special needs and are trained to mentor and support other parents. We believe parents are their child’s best advocates. Matrix provides advice, emotional support, and information to mentor parents in this role.

Parent Advisors...

  • Respect each family’s values.
  • Model collaborative communication.
  • Help parents set priorities and review pros and cons of options.
  • Communicate with professionals at a parent’s request to help address an issue.
  • Coach parents in preparing for IEP or other special needs meetings.
  • Make Early Start home visits.
  • Attend IEP meetings based on complexity of the situation and if it may prevent due process.
  • Withdraw from a case when a family has hired paid advocates or attorneys.
  • Do not recommend any particular treatment, philosophy or course of action.

To speak with a parent advisor, call the Helpline at 800.578.2592.
