Online Training: Planning for College Transition for Parents and Their High School Student

TASK invites you to a special online workshop presented by our partners at Parents Helping Parents, our fellow Parent Training and Information Center in San Jose, California.

What you & your student will learn:

This 2-hour presentation is focused on the college application process and what to expect as you prepare, as a family, for the transition to college.  It was developed for parents and students who are starting 10 & 11th grade in the fall.  You are also welcome if your student will be a Senior, or has already graduated, and you are interested in gathering more information.

The presentation will cover the following topics:

• Overview of the application process
• Self-advocacy and college readiness
• Difference between high school and college
• Disability offices and what they can provide
• Choosing the right school
• Assistive technology

Who is this event for?
Parents should attend with any college-bound student, ages 16+, and has some type of special needs (typically diagnosed with LD/ADHD/Autism/CP).

Presenters:

Marci Schwartz, LCSW, Ph.D.
Dr. Marci Schwartz is the founder of Thrive College Counseling in Los Gatos where she works with students with unique learning profiles. Students have the opportunity to learn the skills necessary for independence and provide support in locating the best college fit to meet their educational and social/emotional needs. She is also an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Dianah Marr, Education and AT Specialist
Dianah has 17 years of working in the field of Education and has been working at PHP for 10 years as an Education Specialist and more recently as an AT Specialist. She provides families and professionals with information and resources on special education-related topics including IEP development, 504 plans, and assistive technology options. She is a parent of a college-bound teen with high functioning autism and another teen with generalized anxiety.
