Marin CIL: Advocacy Help Today and The Last Day
A message from Ted Jackson, Chief Executive Officer, Marin Center for Independent Living (CIL).
The Independent Living Movement was founded on systems change advocacy from its beginnings in Berkeley in 1972, and when it was solidified in the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 – the foundation for Centers for Independent Living.
Since the 1979 founding of the Marin Center for Independent Living (Marin CIL) we have placed a high importance on advocacy that changes systems to benefit people with disabilities, older adults and their families and caregivers. This tradition lives on today.
In recent years Marin CIL along with community partners successfully advocated for a raise in IHSS care provider wages. Over the past two years we provided education, support and transportation for community volunteer advocates and their allies to be heard in Sacramento. These efforts helped to save important home and community based services for disabled people and older adults like access to nutrition programs, emergency housing, caregiving and protecting the IHSS back up provider program.
In fact, as I write this email today a Marin CIL board member and I are sitting in a California Senate hearing waiting to testify in support of a bill that will help make providing accessibility and being ADA easier for businesses. This is an effort to honor our goals to achieve better community access and inclusion for people with disabilities and older adults, while also being a good partner to our fellow businesses.
But to keep advocating we need your support. Because of restrictions on some of our funding we often are not able to use our grants to support these efforts. That’s why we need direct contributions from community supporters like you.
Today is the last day of our fiscal year, and before we close out the year – can I count on you to make a contribution TODAY to support our advocacy? We need to raise just $2,000.00 more of unrestricted general funds to support our FY 26-27 advocacy before the next fiscal year begins tomorrow
For 47 years Marin CIL has been a beacon of successful advocacy, with your help we can continue that legacy!
