Below find a sampling of the kinds of transition assessments available. Please note: Assessments should meet students where they are. There is no ONE best assessment for all students. The student interview is also an essential element of the ITP (Individual Transition Plan) assessment process.

Industry standards for career exploration (for all job seekers):

This is an interactive information site for career exploration. It has detailed job descriptions and several inventories for students to learn more about their work preferences.

Occupational Outlook Handbook: https://www.bls.gov/ooh/
This is a national publication. It is the standard career research tool and is based on vocational interests.

California Vocational Exploration Assessments:

CalCRN (California Career Resource Network): http://www.californiacareers.info/
CalCRN provides resources for anyone interested in developing career self-management skills. It is not specifically for students in Special Education. Its primary duty is to distribute career information, resources, and training materials to middle and high schools educators. The site includes links to:

The following link to CalCRN takes students (and parents and teachers) through a process for developing a personal career action plan. It also includes several self-assessments and ‘learn about yourself’ exercises. These self-assessments include characteristics inventory, a multiple intelligence checklist, skills assessment, an inventory and personality test, a job values inventory, and a self-assessment wheel:

CA Transition Alliance sample assessments are specifically for Special Education students who are Transitioning to Adulthood. CA Transition Alliance is listed as one of the Six Essential Resources for Transition to Adulthood.
